Ven A Mi: Big Monster Fish Hook

My first post, the band that spawned this idea: Big Monster Fish Hook.

Big Monster Fish Hook was a Boston band. They were friends of mine. I thought they were the greatest band ever. Their names were Mark and Lisa, sometimes accompanied by a gentleman named Brad. People LOVED them. We thought they were going to be huge. Apparently Mark had sent a demo tape to 4AD and Ivo liked it, but Lisa had other goals in life. My friends Noah and Andrew founded a record label (called Milk Crate Records - such a great name) just to put the record out.

And still, to this day, it’s such a great record. I more or less picked a song at random - the first ten songs on the record are so solid, and part of my musical universe. I still listen to them all the time.

My friend Annie and I had a small, fledgling graphic design firm at the time, and we were so thrilled to get the commission both for the Milk Crate logo and the artwork for this CD, my first CD cover. God, I can’t even find a copy of it online.

Lisa moved in with me and my roommates for that summer - the summer it felt like they were playing all the time, along with Turkish Delight and Mistle Thrush and Helium. She was a wonderful girl, and she would sing in the house, as she cleaned, or puttered, and her voice was just… astonishing. She disappeared not long after - rumor had it she headed off to the religious/cult/organic farms outside of Boston that supplied some of the vegan and asian restaurants in town. I don’t know much about it. It was all just rumors. We never really saw her again. But this was always a great record, and I miss her.

Update: I dug out my own copy and scanned the art:
